Memories of the "old" auditorium

I was sitting in the balcony on a Sunday morning.  It was Lord's Supper Sunday.  There was a Hacker sitting a couple of people down the pew from me.  He was racked out most of the service.  During the Lord's Supper he had the cup of juice in his hand and he was leaning forward with his head bowed.  I caught a glimpse of his head and hand dropping slowly and then recovering nicely.  After about the 10th nod he lost control of the cup of juice and down to the floor it went.  He stayed awake after that. :)

That reminds me of one Sunday when I came into the warm auditorium off the cold Chicago route and (like usual) promptly fell asleep in the balcony.  It was Lord's supper Sunday.  An usher woke me up to take the bread.  I fell back asleep.  The same usher woke me up to take the juice.  I fell back asleep!!!  The truth is that I hardly ever heard sermons on Sunday mornings because I always fell asleep.  Went home for Christmas and sat in the church auditorium and promptly fell asleep because that was what my body was programmed to do!!!

Stinkin' Hackerette!!

John Mark had knee surgery (due to his awesome football abilities)sometime my Junior year, we were engaged by then I believe. He had just gotten out of the hospital still loopy (actually he is always loopy!!)We sat right in front of a staff member, John Mark fell asleep and put his head on my shoulder the whole time-no demerits given!!

Sunday nights were the hardest for me. I would be up at 5:00 am and then bus all day, so by the time it came to Sunday night church I was dead tired!!! Hard to keep my eyes open!

Who else goes back to THIS auditorium?

I remember one time there was a spanish guy who was loud and obnoxious  "amener" - we couldn't stand the guy - he never shut up.  He would stand on the rail and waive his Bible and scream and holler.  One Sunday night he got raired up and started.  Well, he took it a little too far and nearly fell overboard.  His Bible and all the paperwork in it went flying.  The whole balcony started laughing.  After that he kind of quieted down.  He got a girlfriend and she kept him in line and quiet.

I know exactly who mean although I don't remember his name. He was a former gangbanger who was a big name in his local gang. Got saved and became quite boisterous. That girlfriend became his wife and she sat quietly by as he stood up and waved his Bible and shouted. He was going to Mexico as a missionary but I have lost track of him.

My greatest memory of the auditorium itself was when we came into church one day and the balcony extension had been started even before the church had voted on it!

Of course the story was that only a quote was given and permission to build was not granted, but we all really knew better.

And if the vote for it didn't pass..... :o, it would be removed.

Well it did pass in Deacon's meeting, though it was a contentious meeting.
Bro. Hyles had gone too far too fast. He also wanted to extend the center balcony out to the 6 row mark just like the east and west balconies.
This was beat back and never happened.
Bro. Hyles used to say it is easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.
We all practiced that.

I also go back into this picture and am in here somewhere.  Good memories.

I always got a kick out of watching Darrel Moore make his grand entry to church by stomping down the balcony extension about 10 minutes late - like, almost every service!

I don't know Darrell Moore very well.  He became a teacher during my years at HAC.  I had him for one class  He always seemed to give off a "cocky" attitude.  I could be totally wrong about him.

My parents were married in this auditorium.  I was baptized by JH in this auditorium too.

Shortly after this auditorium was built, my grandma and uncle were visiting my parents and both of them were saved and then followed in baptism.  My grandma and uncle lived 1.5 hours from Hammond so they never regularly attended, but 30 years later she told me how JH got her and her son in the water and baptized them.  I had never heard the more detailed story and I am glad that I was told.  She now is 97 years old and I'm thankful that when she draws her final breath, she'll be assured a home in heaven.

You will not find a more arrogant speaker.
Check out his swan song when he spoke at FBCH after he was canned.
