Microphones: Invading your personal space?

Much ado in some Bible universities/colleges was made about keeping a microphone on the stand and giving it plenty of distance from your mouth so as not to "invade your personal space" or appear to be entertaining.

Where are we at on this, these days?
 
I recall being told that young/teen girls shouldn't hold their mic up to the face because it was too close in appearance to a particular sexual activity. My thought was what kind of perverse mind is imagining a sexual act during a worship song. When my daughter was 10 she sang "As The Deer" while holding the mic. If there was any sexual sin in the room it was in the heart(s) of perverts.
