Places that I remember in the HAC/FBCH area

Remember the tux shop on Taft Street in Merrillville?  There was a bridal shop next to it.  Everyone I knew rented their tux from that place.

Strack & Van Til used to be on the northwest corner of Rt. 30 and Indianapolis. There was a Walgreens pharmacy next to it.  As a newlywed, we did our grocery shopping at that Strack & Van Til.  Walgreens moved out and then Strack & Van Til built a new store across the street on the northEAST corner adjacent to Walmart. The old building is used for several other stores now.

Strack didn't build that new building. A grocery store named Omni was in there for a while in the 90's. When they left Strack moved across the street into it.

...cashed my first ever work paycheck at that old Strack. Good times.

That's right!  I forgot that.  The original store didn't last long before Stracks moved it.

At one time Hammond Baptist High School had a football team.  They played on a public school football field off Rt. 30 in Dyer.  Fall of 1980 the college took us there to watch a game.  Opening snap the HB running back got the ball and ran it all the way to the other end for a touchdown.  When the player took off his helmet, it was Bro. Hyles!

Yah, that was a total setup with a players knowing not to tackle the "Old Man"

K Mart on Rt. 30.  Before Walmart came it was the only superstore around!  haha!  Girls buses ran there twice a week.

Remember Dan Wolfe's house on the corner in Schererville?  The town bought it from him, tore it down, and built a new city hall/police station.  When Dan lived there, he would sell Christmas trees in his front lawn at Christmastime.  Anybody ever buy one from him?

My first apartment after marriage was next door. There was a photography shop in the front and I lived in the back. There were a few upstairs apartments also. I was sad to hear they were going to tear it down as well. Never bought a tree from him though.

Also, the Carpenters lived in that house before they moved to Baptist City.

I wonder how many students went to the theater in the Southlake Mall parking lot????  Surprisingly, I never did.  I was good back then...haha!

And he wore MY helmet! :)

I believe it was '81 because it was my first year on the team and since I was the worst player on the team, they knew I wouldn't be using it. :)

Smellin', the photography studio moved out and Ying Ling's moved in to their space.  After Dan remarried, his mother-in-law, Nanny Garland, moved into that little apartment behind the cleaners.  I cleaned the stove for her when she moved in!  Good memories!  All that's gone now.

Yep. Both teams were aware of what was going on.

Oh, WOW....just put a big smile on my face.  Our family LOVED this place!  Lots of good memories standing in line watching the girls' buses go by and feeling sorry for them. This would be high on the list of my kids' favorite places.  We went there regularly.  The signal of cold weather coming was when it would shut down for the winter.  And we would always be there after the first service it would open in the spring!

There was a Burger King on Route 30 as you headed toward Merrillville.  It was on the right hand side.

This was the location of one of my favorite Owen Ivey stories.  If you were wearing a dress shirt everyone around the area knew you were a HAC student.  Owen and I were ordering our meals.  A couple of long haired guys were in front of us waiting for their meal.  The two of them started whispering and laughing in our direction.  Owen and I were seniors and we welcomed these kind of situations. :)  Owen always carried his HAC ID cards from all 4 years.  Owen very quickly looked at the two guys and said, "Yea, we're stinkin' Hackers!"  He then proceeded to pull out his ID cards and he slapped them down on the counter in front of them one by one as he yelled, "Here I am as a freshman!  Here's my sophomore year!  Check out my junior year photo!  And now here I am as a senior!!"  I can still see the look of shock on their faces.  As we got our food they asked us if we wanted to sit with them.  Good times!

The rail road tracks between the church and the parking garage.  Remember when the deaf man was killed by a train there during a Pastors' School?

Six years at HAC, never went there. Took my kids back to visit the campus two years ago and went there for lunch. Loved it. Can't believe I drove past that place all those years and never stopped inside...
