Places that I remember in the HAC/FBCH area

Peter Reter Park.  That's where my dad taught me to catch a fly ball.

Lemon Lake.  So many memories of family picnics and group outings there I cannot tell them all.

As a girl without a car who didn't really know anybody who had a car (at least the first few years) and worked and did ministry--I don't think I went to any of the places you all have mentioned!  Never really learned the area around HAC and FBC.  One time the DOW's office wanted to send me on an errand, but I had no idea where the place was located.  The secretary was exasperated that I didn't know, but I thought, "How am I supposed to know?  I practically never leave campus for fun!"  My parents came to see us one time and took everybody from my home church out to eat.  One of my friends got in their car, looked around and said with glee, "We're in a REAL car!"

What was the name of the drive in on Indianapolis where all of the old cars would show up?  Was it the Blue Moon Drive in?

The Blue Top and it has been resurrected by the owner of Simon Sez in Merrillville. He bought the old, boarded up Blue Top and it is now opened.

Simon Sez is still in business?

Back in the day, my wife and I would drive by and joke about the place. We never saw but maybe one or two cars in the parking lot and would joke that it was probably a cover for a drug gang because they never had any business and couldn't believe they kept their doors open.

Zel's Great Roast Beef

Yep. Fantastic. When I worked in East Chicago, my boss would treat me to lunch there periodically. Fantastic roast beef sandwiches!

In the early to mid 70's, when the college first started, there was a fast food place on the South West corner of 30 and 41 called Burger Chef. So many HACkers tried to witness to the workers there that HAC students were eventually banned.  The chain was somehow a favorite of Coach Price and we wound up eating at Burger Chefs on road games.

I remember being at Pastors School in 1975. After the Thursday evening service there was a huge group in there from Pastors School and somebody got the crowd singing "I've got a mansion". The employees did not seem to appreciate it. If I remember correctly there were a couple of HAC students working there.

Woodmar Shopping Center in Hammond.  Had Carson Pirie and Scott.  There was a grocery store at one end and the Lion's Court at the other end.  When the grocery store closed they replaced it with the Turtle Court. This was somewhere around 77-78.

Johnny Round the Clock.  Ain't another place like it.  Open all night to get real food at 1:00am on your way home from work.

Simon Sez was owned by an older gentleman from Crown Point before this new owner. The building was paid for and he was never hurting. Believe it or not, they were packed during the lunch and dinner hours when he had it. I have been eating there as long as I can remember, They have / had great tacos.

The new owner has even more business and also has classic car nights and has made cars the theme of the place.

No wonder you are ranting!

Remember Dan Wolfe's house on the corner in Schererville?  The town bought it from him, tore it down, and built a new city hall/police station.  When Dan lived there, he would sell Christmas trees in his front lawn at Christmastime.  Anybody ever buy one from him?
Always had some classmate who lived in the upstairs that Dan would rent out.

The Tuxedo shop on Indy Blvd is Dunhill.

They asked me to model tuxes for a bridal show in Lynnwood one year.
I never checked the date until the week before, and to my horror, it was on a Wed. eve.
I did it, cuz I promised them to, but I felt so backslidden, that I decided to not ever work through Wed church again.

When I got married, my wife found the pix, and cut out all of the Brides maids models that I escorted, so I was in the picture by myself, lol.

One thing that sickened me, was the conduct of the Brides-to-be's Mothers.
Here they were ,preparing their daughter for the same life that they lived and that was resposible for her stable home.
Yet, they are shamelessly catcalling, whistling at, and hitting on the Tux models.
Like, "here is what you have to look forward to, Honey: marry some guy and ogle the rest".
What a pitiful representation of America's homes.
And, I venture that most were Christian Reformed.

That whole night was a wake-up call.

Spent a lot of my hard earned Raco Steel money there about midnight or so...  :D

One night, TRB's brother and myself decided to stop in there, after work.

We are in work clothes, around 6a.m., and we sit down and order.

Dr. Evans walks in, with a companion, and sits on the other side.
We managed to stay hidden, and slipped out, paying his bill as we went.  Lol.

And who could forget that large shopping center called Peddler's Way!!

The little raquetball club was called "Gators", last time I saw it, Raider.
They expanded it some, and built a huge Meijer Thrifty Acres nearby.

Anybody ever lift at Gold's Gymn on KENNEDY in Schererrville?
