Places that I remember in the HAC/FBCH area

The Dairy Queen in Dyer - our family and the Hasse kids rode to school together, and we'd all throw our change into the ashtray until we collected enough to afford a Dilly Bar for each of us, then we'd stop on the way home.  Of course, we had to pay with a handful of pennies, nickels and dimes.  Fun times!!

There was a little store across Sibley from the old Youth Center, which was the perfect place to visit on the walk back to the auditorium after Sunday School.  Soda, candy, Sen Sen - all the necessities.

AND...the old movie theater in downtown Hammond!  I only went there once - to see Goin' Coconuts starring Donny & Marie.  8)

You know Freddie's Dad was tragically murdered, right?

He was loyal to the church, he was the deacon who brought the offering from Spanish services over to the safe in Miller Hall.
The Spanish pastor had begun to skim the offerings, eventually taking about 250,000 and building a building in Lynnwood, IL.
Freddie's Dad was "robbed" as he took the offering over.
They shot and killed him.

Knowing Mr. E, he probably told them to go jump, and then fought.

I put my ear to the ground, and word on the street was it was an inside job.
When i told Freddie, he said "we know who did it".  I never heard the results, except that the guy who pulled the trigger was caught, and that he was a member.

That still infuriates me, now that i think about it!!!
I had never heard any of that.  Wow.  When did it occur?

Then why didn't I hear about it?  Hmmmmmmm.  I remember that Spanish pastor leaving.  I was simply told that he wanted the Spanish church to be independent and run their finances independently of the church, so he and JH disagreed and he was moving to another ministry.

Freddy wasn't around HB then - at least not that I remember.  Probably in the Spanish dept?

Amazing.

Sorry, not a big fan of the Chinese.  My Grandma wouldn't let us support the communist takeover.

I had not thought of this until now.  Today I love Chinese food.  We have several very good Chinese buffets in our area.  When I was a HAC student in the early '80s we never ate Chinese.  I don't remember a Chinese buffet in the area.

This was the word on the street.  I have no idea what the official adjudication of it was.  I just know that we weren't able to prosecute VH, who is rumored to be behind the Encinas murder.
It was probably only supposed to be a robbery, but maybe RE recognized the "robber".
Either way, when VH pulled out a few years later, with a building already being built, etc., it kinda validated what the street said about the whole situation.
I'm sure VH is prolly a blackmail victim by now...

There really weren't any Ch buffets.

You would order Ch. carry-out, and get those magic containers, that still had the same amount in them, the morning after.

Cal City and downtown Hammond had some real good hole-in-the wall carry out joints.

Another dem. thread candidate:

TRB's brother and I found a great Chinese joint in the strip mall at Pine Island.
They had a t.v.
The lady who ran it adopted us.
We would head there Mon. night, eat, watch the whole football game, and then head off to our midnights job.
She just handed us the remote when we came in.

The rail road tracks between the church and the parking garage.  Remember when the deaf man was killed by a train there during a Pastors' School?

I do remember. Also the death of DW at Youth Conference outside the Civic Center. He had been hit by a car driven by another HB teen. DW's brother was in the passenger seat when his brother was hit, IIRC. Good family from what I knew of them. Very sad story.

In 1977 (i think) I remember staying in a flea-bag hotel a block or two from the church. I stayed there during Pastor's School. Got a late start for the pilgrimage with no prior reservations made. I'm thinking it was the Hotel Lincoln? Does this sound remotely familar to anyone? Wish I could remember what I paid a night in this crummy place. One good thing was that I parked the car in the parking garage and never moved it all week. Walked downtown for lunch and dinner.

Wow, I hadn't thought about that place in years.

If you had not heard, he passed away in the last couple of weeks. Car accident.

The Hammond Woolworth's.  Spend some time in there during teen soulwinning when we were supposed to walk the streets of Hammond.
