rap

I, OTOH, am not a closet Catholic. I'm a completely open Episcopalutheran Anglo-Catholic. And I do like really old traditional music, such as Gregorian chants.

Al Mohler: Thinking About Thinking About Rap - Unexpected Thoughts Over Thanksgiving

Rap music is not my music. I do not come from a culture in which rap music is the medium of communication and I do not have the ear for it that I have for other forms of music. But I do admire its virtuosity and the hold that is has on so many, for whom it is a first and dominant musical language. I want that language taken for the cause of the Gospel and I pray to see a generation of young Gospel-driven rappers take dominion of that music for the glory of God. I see that happening now, and I rejoice in it. I want to see them grow even more in influence, reaching people I cannot reach with music that will reach millions who desperately need the Gospel. The same way that folks who first heard Bach desperately needed to hear the Gospel.

in my opinion.... most music today ... even ccm... maybe especially ccm.... has very little to do with worshiping or glorifying God.... and in fact... it doesn;t even have much to do with music..... it;s all about glorifying the musician or whichever performer is jumping around on the stage with their hands in the air and the microphone stuck in their face.....

any time you have to see the performer in action ... or be entertained by their antics, movements and facial expressions in order to get the most out of the music.....  then the music has already fallen short of what would glorify God and even what would stand as an example of good music....

the finest music in the world is best enjoyed without all that and without even seeing the musician at all...... in fact seeing the musician in action or watching them contorting on a stage actually takes away from the experience of really good music.... and the best musicians and composers know this......  ...... the rest are like artists who paint images of themselves in all their work.... or photographers who are always shooting self portraits..... it;s all about them.... and very little else.......

I love this post...as a matter of fact, even in our church during special music, I always close my eyes...I don't want to be distracted by looking at the singer, but want to hear and focus on the Lord they are singing to!

I have put my head down, and closed my eyes, and listened to specials, for years.  People say I'm rude.  I say " I'm not staring at someone while they sing, especially not some chick."

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding... some of this comes off as just rude.

Since our singing in church involves "teaching and admonishing one another" what good is it to not look at the person and join in with them? Would you not look at a SS teacher while they are teaching? Would you turn your head away from an elder who is admonishing you? (Col 3.16)

Let's not let a proud, arrogant special music singer distort what is really intended. If you cannot sing along or accept the teaching/admonishment, and find that you must turn your head down or away, there are FAR MORE problems in that church than a particular singer. RUN! Get yourself to a Third Day/Casting Crowns concert and find out what worship is like!

It also seems to be predicated on the false idea that one cannot honor the individual and honor God at the same time. Well, that and the idea that any display other than a stoic, emotion-less demeanor is somehow inherently vain.

Those poor saps! They won't rap and they dare not clap!  :(
and regardless of when they lived or what they did all mankind is ultimately redeemed through the work of Christ on the cross......did Christ die to save a genre form of music?........
The Christ died to redeem all of creation, music included.
.... rock music was not created for worship.....
Would you prefer "All things were created for worship" or "Neither was a piano" because both are correct from different perspectives.

And David danced before the Lord with all his might...

...As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart...

...And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord. I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.”  And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

Will you be a Michal or a David? As for me and my family, we will celebrate before the Lord. I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the joyfully redeemed of God of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.

You need to really break Col 3:16 apart. If you do, you will find it has nothing to do with ministering to someone via a "song". I don't particularity like the idea of someone "ministering" via a "song". Maybe you can point to another verse that might make your case. Col 3:16 isn't one of them.

Either way, I don't see how "watching" someone "PERFORM" has anything to do with what aleshanee said. I think she is dead on. She is speaking of a self glorifying "performance"... not a sincere offering of praise and glory.

By the way, true "PRAISE"....isn't a performance.

I've read some very stupid things from you before.... but this has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever read from you.

I reckon Christ died to redeem a turd from your local sewer system.....

I've heard that junk time and time again. How dare anyone question the actions of someone praising Christ.

Well.... I've got news for you rsc2a. Paul did this very thing when he dealt with those at Corinth.

1Co 14:26  How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

David didn't care who saw him... .and David didn't do it in a organized assembly of believers. Maybe you might make a application.... and realize just how stupid a comparisons you've made.

Well, that covers a lot of ground.

A performance... by very nature......is done exclusively to be seen of others.

Definition of performance "an act of staging or presenting a play, concert, or other form of entertainment."

In some manner, yes.

Give yourself a slap, for posting this crap.  The praise of men is really a trap.  I'll give you some time, to spin a new rhyme, while I take my afternoon nap.

In him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. - Col 1:19-20

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. Romans 8:20-21

...whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. Acts 3:21

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” - Rev 21:5

Would you like me to swap those out and put in five more? Ten?

Join in with a soloist, from your seat, and they'll be casting more than crowns.  It'd be funny, I'd hi-5 as they walked you past.
