Revival!

The money went into a fund controlled by a committee of several pastors to insure it was spent on what it was meant.

The "fund" is not a person so I don't think it is required to tithe.

My understanding is that 100% of the monies will be used for ministry....so the tithe is practically AND biblically moot.  :)

Criticism of the Burlington Revival front their right flank.
I saw this link posted on FB and it caused quite the debate.

A good article.  I believe I asked some similar questions earlier in this thread.

Also, as one of the commentators in Cloud's article stated, I too question what was going on with D.L. Harrison and his "call".  I have been friends with his dad on Facebook for years and asked him directly about what is going on with his son.  He became an instant "celebrity", and now advertises himself as an "evangelist".  His dad kindly answered my questions but I know from my experience that in all the ministries I've been involved with, that this instant rise to evangelism would not be allowed.  It appears to be a "southern" thing.

Good.  As long as IFBs are at each other's throats they'll stay out of everyone else's business.

Who is DL Harrison?

?I watched a few services live, have preached for one of the local pastors that was promoting this, and have preached in about 10 churches in that area. To say everything that needs to be said would require a book. Extra-Scriptural revelation, HAVING AN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD PASTOR OPEN IN PRAYER ONE NIGHT, Charismatic phraseology (claiming a special anointing, authority, and liberty that comes with a tent). So much is unScriptural there. One of the big events was the profession of faith by Harrison, who promptly announced a call to preach and is now, as a novice, preaching meetings as a self-proclaimed evangelist. Another fact is that you can look at services of New Hope on the Internet and observe [mostly] empty seats. I wonder if there?s been any growth because of the ?Revival?? The sinners who ?went forward? to be saved, the ones I watched, were counseled for a minute or two and declared saved. We know that is a problem. So much could be said.?

The gentleman was saved, called to preach and is now preaching meetings...all in a period of 2 months!? I somehow missed that or at least it failed to register with me. I can assure you that is not commonplace down south. I've never heard of such before...and it causes me to smh now.

Not 2 months.  2 weeks. (well, maybe 3 weeks)

And my mistake, it is D.R. Harrison, not D.L.

Not only this, but his father agreed to let him take over a ministry that he has run for decades.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that this man and his wife got saved at that revival, but as I told his dad, he has zero history of faithfulness.  He needs to get in a local church, sit down, shut up and listen.  I'm sure all this has to do with his daddy being a well-known and well-respected evangelist and now pastor from that area.

Here is a promo photo from a meeting this man was conducting just weeks after he was saved!  As I said, it's a "southern" thing.  His dad said he was only giving his testimony, but he has already started calling himself an "evangelist".  I told his dad even Paul needed 2 years of training.

Here is a quote from David Cloud's evaluation of the revival. I don't always agree with him but this does seem reasonable and reminds me of the objections my family had to the direction Billy Graham choose in the early 50s. My parents who had graduated from the school were Billy Graham was the president were devastated. This was the start of his using Catholic priests for altar workers.

1. Too much singing (often very emotional, and often an hour)
2. Too long of an invitation (sometimes up to 30-60 min)
3. Not enough preaching (usually the shortest part of the service; they even had one service with no preaching!)
4. Not enough real preaching: Mr. Townsend takes a text and launches from it. He is not an expositional preacher, but what I call a pointless ranter
5. Pride: I saw pride come forth from this meeting in several ways:

a. I messaged them on Facebook to inquire as to how they were introducing converts to local churches, and of their vetting process of altar workers, and never received an answer.
b. I commented that Bible-believers ought not to be associating with the ecumenical crowd, or promoting such things, which caused me to be banned from the Facebook page.
c. I commented the same on CT Townsend?s Twitter account, which caused me to be banned from his personal Twitter page.
d. The picture of him with the Billy Graham Association is taken down, but no apology has been made for it.
e. CT Townsend named his website after himself (this is a personal preference that I do not care for)

6. Very poor discernment: Unfortunately, many prominent figures in the IFB movement have apparently fallen in love with CT Townsend. I know that many have been sucked in. We, sadly, do not have thinking congregations/pastors in our day that compare what they see/hear with Scripture, but instead accept almost anything that looks/hears/feels good!

This sounds flippant, but raises an interesting point to consider... if one is raising money for a specific object (such as a tent), isn't it a misuse of those funds to tithe from them?  After all, isn't the concept of the tithe (and if you're anti-tithing, replace "tithe" with "give") that one should tithe off of what one has "earned"?  Money given for a purpose doesn't fit, in my opinion.

To be clear, I believe that these are not David Cloud's words; he was quoting someone.

I think, however, that David Cloud makes valid points.

Yes.  That is what I said when I first mentioned this.

Quick question for Tarheel Baptist: Has your church seen a surge in attendance directly due to this tent revival?

Thanks,

Billy

No, we have not.
But we were not a participating church in the meeting so we were not privy to helping follow up on the converts.
