No, that's an absolute defense to slander.

Gossip may well be true. Its defining characteristic is that it's derogatory.
I remember from my business law class there were three defenses for slander:

1. What you spoke is the truth
2. You are an attorney arguing a case in court
3. You are senator or congressman speaking in an active session of congress

If Gossip is a lie, it is slander. If Gossip is true it certainly isn't Gossip. Thanks for making the case. Slander is a type of Gossip.
What I got from this:

"If gossip is a lie, it is slander"
So gossip that is a lie is slander and gossip that is not a lie is just gossip.

"If gossip is true it certainly isn't gossip"
Of course in the first sentence a statement being a lie made it impossible for it to be gossip, so only true statements had the possibility of being gossip in sentence one. In sentence two we find that it is impossible for true statements to be gossip. So it looks like according to Treasure gossip does not really exist.

I heard that you're Canadian. That means different things to different people.
People may have different opinions of Canadians but anyone who has a reasonable command of language would understand that a Canadian is a Citizen of the nation of Canada.

Unfortunately, treasure has a grasp of the English language that frequently leads him to say some very silly things.

It's simple really.

Suppose Al tells Brian, in confidence, that he has, say, a chlamydia infection. This is, of course, meant to be kept between themselves. But Brian shortly goes out and tells Chris and Dave. Dave tells Ed and Frank, and so on. The next day, it's all over town and Al is being mocked.

Was the information being passed around true? Yes.
Was it gossip? Also yes.

I wonder where Brian got the chlamydia infection from?

If you don't want someone else to know, then don't tell anyone. Much less tell someone you've sinned and got an STD and would like to keep it quit.

I suppose you're Catholic now and everything stays with the Priest that absolves you of your sin?

I suppose Jesus will be gossiping in the day of Judgement..... when there is nothing hidden that shall not be known?

He that hides their sin shall what?

I'm certain that many preachers do things in secret and would rather they stay that way. When someone comes forth detailing what they've done, they always say

"It is nothing but Gossip".

i wonder why you think refuting details that you added to my analogy constitutes an argument against it, instead of, by contrast, deliberately missing the point.

But those straw men do throw up a decent cloud of dust and make a nice "poof" sound when you smack them, don't they?

I suppose you're Catholic now
I suppose you suppose a lot of idiotic things. Isn't accusing people of being Catholic UGC's schtick? Are you sure you're not one of the Wonder Twins in drag?

The word gossip occurs 4 times in the ESV and 6 times in the NIV. Here are the ESV renderings:

  1. Ezekiel 36:3
therefore prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God: Precisely because they made you desolate and crushed you from all sides, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, and you became the talk and evil gossip of the people,

  1. Romans 1:29
They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,

For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.

  1. 1 Timothy 5:13
Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.
In the Greek in 1 Timothy 5:13 the word used means babblers or foolish talkers. The KJV also uses the word tattler which isn't a gossip in the way we use it today. What's interesting is that a tattler is also the name of a bird that whistles (whistleblower).

What about great IFB leaders like Tony Huton, Larry Brown, and Jack Trieber slamming CCM???

Jack Hyles once said the CCM industry was run by homosexuals but Hyles hated CCM and Jerry Falwell Sr. for endorsing CCM and he didn't have a problem with Hutson, Brown, or Trieber slandering Fallwell or CCM groups but didn't want the sheep (congregation) too since that was Hyles demand.

Maybe you're a gambler and "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". Take your pick. Regardless of choice, you're advocating that the exposing of sin equals Gossip. Thanks for the "cover up"... Ransom

Ransom mentioned one of the two places in the NT that really speaks of Gossip. 12:20 and 1 Peter 2:1. Both have to do with lying. He just refuses to admit it.

When you confirm the sin of "leadership". You're not "Gossiping" when you tell everyone you know. You're just telling the Truth.

If you don't want someone else to know, then don't tell anyone.
In other words,

a) You ignored my point (the definition of gossip, not how a hypothetical character contracted a hypothetical STD); and
b) You're admitting to the straw man argument.

And since that's the case, there's no point in continuing this conversation with you. Have a good one.

Speaking of lying, there you go again.

My definition of gossip (derogatory information passed supposedly in confidence) is a gloss of the definition of the relevant Greek terms as given in the two primary New Testament lexica: BDAG and Louw-Nida.

providing harmful information about a person, often spoken in whispers or in low voice, with the implication that such information is not widely known and therefore should presumably be kept secret - "gossip." (Louw-Nida 33.404 s.v. ψιθυρισμος)

in our lit. only in a bad sense information about someone that ls offered in a derogatory tone of confidentiality, (secret) gossip, tale-bearing (BDAG, s.v. ψιθυρισμος, p. 1098)

Their definition has nothing to do with the truth or falsity of the gossip; why would I add meaning to the word that it doesn't denote?

You miss my point that the Scriptures declare that those who hid their sin shall not prosper.

HOWEVER, you prefer they hide their sin and claim those who expose it are "gossiping".

No one is whispering. They are often SHOUTING when others say they're gossiping.

Exposing sin always looks bad for the one being exposed. You can't hide behind the word "Gossip". Which always involves a lie. When you tell the Truth, you're not gossiping.

My favorite statement yet:
Of course I said such in the context of discussing whether something can be "gossip" if it is true. Which it can't. You convenient leave out such comments in your response because you're an ungodly liar.

You should love it. It is the Truth. Truth isn't slander. Gossip involves slander. You obvious do not enjoy the Truth.

No, I'm ignoring your point, since it had nothing to do with my point.

Please, though, continue to drag those red herrings around. We didn't really need any more evidence that you don't know what you're talking about, but it helps.
