Who Are the 144,000 in Revelation?

Nothing in the passage leads to interpreting the 144,000 as anything but a literal number of Jews—12,000 taken from every tribe of the children of Israel...
Except Dan.

So, not ALL Israel is saved? Replacement theology is okay as long as it's all in the family, so to speak?

But the half-tribe of Ephraim is also excluded from the list, which is significant, since the half-tribe of Manassah is not. If Joseph replaces Dan, it could only be Ephraim half. Why not just say Ephraim?

The 144,000 are still not literally from all the tribes of Israel.

And it's not literally 12,000 from each tribe. 24,000 are taken from literal Joseph.

If you hadn't tuned out so soon, you may have heard a better explanation.

Got Questions is good enough for me. Deal with it.

"Nothing in the passage leads to interpreting the 144,000 as anything but a literal number of Jews"

Except for the fact that it's written in Revelation, where pretty much everything else is symbolic. That's the nature of apocalyptic literature.

"It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins" (Rev. 14:4). So, only men?

So, really, you've just got no interest in interpreting it.
In matters such as this, when the simple interpretation fits I don't look for another. If I'm wrong on this, so what?

Whether I agree or not, I always find it interesting and fruitful to examine and understand viewpoints other than my own.

I have no desire to return to the IFB "Circle your Wagons" mindset.

This is just me though.

This hermeneutic approach has been modeled to me since my earliest days of discipleship in SBC/IFB circles. Typically, when this model was not followed, it was because there was an agenda was at play. (Think the J.T. Chick interpretation of the great whore of Babylon)

Since I began my involvement with Calvary Chapel in the early 2000s, has this hermeneutic approach been not just modeled but actually taught. Given my history, it was natural that I gravitated towards it.

I could write an entire treatise as to why I believe the simple approach/interpretation is often the best hermeneutic but my attention span would never allow such a thing.
