It's funny how you guys are trying to make it out like YOUR church assembly refers to the "pastor" as "brother" instead. Wow, you guys have the most unique assemblies!!
Google "church signs", "baptist church signs", or "church pastor signs" and look at the pictures. Wherever you see a reference, it's always pastor, pastor, pastor. It's "our pastor", "the pastor", or "pastor so-and-so". Naturally, you see fewer references to "pastor" if you simply google "church signs", but wherever you DO see a reference, it's always "pastor".
Google "baptist church bulletins". Pastor, pastor, pastor, pastor, pastor.
Google "church brother signs" and look at the pictures. Not a single "our brother", etc., in reference to the "pastor".
My response speaks of both...and again I spend little time worrying about titles. They might identify a position or calling to the general public, but they don't make anyone more special than others. It is the attitude of the person not the title that makes the difference.
Apparently the title makes a difference to Jesus. He said so.
Yes, Jesus said "rabbi", but the modern equivalent of "rabbi" and "instructor" is "pastor", just as the modern equivalent of "father" is "priest" (still called "father", too).
Jesus told us not to call anyone by those titles. In your opinion, it's not worth worrying about. In my opinion, if Jesus said it, it's worth addressing.
Actually, if you want to be specific Jesus did not say anything about calling someone "Pastor"...Paul said that Jesus Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for equipping and edifying. You make too much of a word/position or title and neglect the attitude Jesus is addressing in Matthew, that of the Scribes & Pharisees misusing titles to build up their self importance. Do you really think in the same passage Jesus is telling us never to call our earthly father, "father"? Or is He dealing again with those who would use titles to promote self while putting others down. Your concern for biblical verbage is admirable, but you are missing the point of the passage. Its about the heart brother, and the manipulation of His truth...not merely a word that in the case you are putting in there that's not even there...Pastor is not there.
Yes, God gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for equipping and edifying. God also gave some to be plumbers, some to be pianists, etc. But we don't call people "Plumber Bill" or "Pianist Joe". These are jobs, not titles.
But "Pastor" is a title, and like I said, it is the modern equivalent of "rabbi/teacher/instructor". Obviously, this is important to Jesus, because Jesus tells us not to call people by these titles. He says the reason we shouldn't be using these titles because WE'RE ALL BROTHERS and people tend to exalt themselves with the titles.
Can you not see how the pastor is exalted in 99.9% of assemblies? He's the center of attention, the orator on every Sunday (and maybe Sunday evening, Wednesday evening, etc.), the head honcho of the church. His name "Pastor Chuck" is placed on the church sign and leads the list of people in the bulletin.
You can tell me how humble your pastor is all you want, but if
he objects to changing his title from "pastor" to "brother" that testifies otherwise.
