Trump 2016

Even Russell Moore of the SBC sees the danger of Trump, specifically to the freedom of religion:

Donald Trump is saber-rattling about shutting down mosques in this country, which, as somebody who works every day on religious liberty, I?m astounded that we could have a presidential candidate of either party speaking in such a way. Evangelicals should recognize that any president who would call for shutting down houses of worship ? is the sort of political power that can ultimately shut down evangelical churches.

Source

If Trump is able to get elected and introduce this, at some point down the line the opponents of Christianity will have a foot in the door to take away our freedom to worship as we please.

Moore, Mohler, Land, my kind of folk on the religious liberty subject, of which I am likewise a HUGE proponent.  But if a religion, by and large (and that's the key to my position, by and large), is a national security threat to its very own people because it is subverting the safety of its citizens, namely by grievously injuring and killing them, then ultimately I wouldn't have a problem with it no matter whether it was Abu Muhamed Aziz Osama or Fred Felps.

Until they figure out how to paint all Christians as dangerous. Not like it would be the first time.

Yes, that's the danger inherent to the theory, and the rationale (of Moore et al) behind creating a long tolerant leash for religious liberty.

I can't believe someone would take what Trump said and extend it to peaceful Christian worship!!!

Trump was talking about radicalized Islam worship calling for the killing of US Citizens by those in attendance. They should be shutdown. A so called "radicalized Christian" church calling for killing of US Citizens should be shut down as well.

It is really no different than the idea that we could put some reasonable gun restrictions in place when there is a trustworthy occupant in the White House. Once the good guy is gone the not so good president still has the power. So we cede that power to no one. If the slippery slope logic holds for the 2nd it should also hold for the 1st.

I wasn't talking about the peaceful folk, but those who would radically encourage the killing of those they disagree with, say, like an Eric Rudolph.  What if all those who are ardently pro-life decided it was acceptable to form groups that bombed abortion clinics and shot their doctors?  What if a significant percentage of those evangelicals was able to convince the majority of their brethren that their mission of stamping out the murder of innocent children justified their "defense" (killing the abortionists)?  Would you target that group with austere measures?

Yes, then we agree.

I think I went about that the wrong way. :)

I was looking for a place to jump in and choose the wrong one. I agree with you. I was reference what the SBC guy said. Sorry.

In this case it's not about what Trump thinks now but about someone post-Trump might think based on his/her beliefs down the line. It's not time to change the first amendment. It's time to deal with those whom would abuse the first amendment and break laws. There is an old saying that "hard cases make bad law".  The first amendment has served our country well for a couple of hundred plus years. Lets keep it.

in case y'all haven't guessed, I'm not a Trump fan. I think he has a narcissistic personality disorder similar to Obama's, And I don't have much use for an authortarian nativist trade warrior either. OTOH, his wife is pretty and I love her accent.

Some of you think Trump is a side show, but who else is talking like this?

I'll tell you who, the average American.

Is that supposed to be reassuring?

No offense but I don't want an average American running the country.

None taken.

What I mean by average is the common working man.

Ideally, I'd want to elect someone who didn't want to be president.

I don't think anyone has been like that since George Washington, though.

I would love to be president.

I saw a great "meme" today that sums up how I feel about illegal immigration and possibly the Syrian refugees (depending on how they're handled):

Immigration Without Assimilation is Invasion.

In other words, if you're going to come here, assimilate and become Americans, loyal to America.  If you can't do that, don't come here, because we should boot you out.

The only two potential nominees I hear saying that are Cruz and Trump.

Kind of how we assimilated with the natives? We would all be eating tree bark with prophet.

Or are you admitting that we invaded?
