Please do not think you offended me. I would hate for you tobe burdened by thinking you had that power.  Instead, you made me chuckle and enjoy the absurdity of you thinking you know all about all IFBs. As we say in the South, bless your heart.

I've been among the IFBs for 30 years. Have you done the same? I've been from one end of the spectrum to the other. I've personally meet and fellow-shipped with many of the "icons" of the faith. I've had these same men yell "Amen" throughout the sermons I preached. Have you done the same? I speak from experience.

You belong to IFB? Good for you.

I belong to the body of Christ.

Oh! The sanctimony!
Pass the potatoes....

If it's sanctimonious to identify with Christ, then I'm happily sanctimonious.

The question is how much overlap is there between those who belong to IFB and those who belong to Christ?

I don't have an answer, but the answer is "not a whole lot" according to some IFBs (the ones on here who have suggested that 20-40% of their church is made up of unbelievers).

I'd say that's a conservative estimate. Most of the pastors in IFBdum I've known thought it was better than 50 percent.

I'm not offended in the least, more like filled with pity, like I was for phred phelps.

You know your ownership of the movement is silly. You know it. Keep telling yourself its all "roses". You know better. You're holding on to a corpse.

I wonder if these non-denominational house-church types have stopped beating their wives yet?

Or quit trolling fundamental forums?

Or got over their being enslaved to the big bad mannogawd?

Given up on erecting and burning strawmen?

sure don't look like it from their constant habitation here and beating of dead horses.

If I listed all the hasty generalizations, stereotypes, and categorical errors you've made in this thread alone I'd probably have enough words to rival War and Peace.

Same challenge. Do you care to have a formal debate concerning the issue?

Maybe something along the lines of 'The value of being a Independent Fundamental Baptist"?

Can I point out the fact you're justifying bad behavior by pointing at bad behavior? Is that scholarly enough for you?

This is a true story.  Only the names have been redacted to protect the innocent.  ;)

A friend of mine relates a tale concerning her 1st grade daughter who attends a Christian school.  "Mommy, my teacher said the "s" word today."  My friend's ears pricked right up.  "Oh?  What did she say?", hoping beyond hope that it wasn't that word...Her daughter replied in a whisper, "She said stupid".

My friend did all she could not to laugh, because her daughter had a point, but in context, the teacher did not call any person stupid.  She identified a certain action as stupid, which was perfectly true.

But let this cautionary tale be a little reminder to those of us who indiscriminately use the word "stupid".  This little girl had the right of it.  It truly is "the s word", when it's applied to individual people!

I have perfect verse for you to disseminate for me. Just one. Please do you best to rectify what you've written above in relation to this verse.

Rom 16:18  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

Please pay attention to the fact I've used the KJV. I'm doing my best to play on your own playing field.

After this..... We can take trip into proverbs if you like....

christundivided, I accept.  However, let me say this before I even begin to research your Rom 16:18 challenge:

I said what I said about the word "stupid" because I believe it to be an unnecessarily antagonistic word on its face, as applied to individual people.  It is a word easily avoided by those who choose to show agape love.  For instance, I would never call my son stupid.  First of all, it's hurtful and secondly, it's not true.  My son is not stupid, even though he does some stupid things at times:  Mom, I broke the ____.  Oh, how did that happen?  Well, I got mad and ____.  Did it make you feel better when you broke it?  No, not really.  And I wish I didn't have to tell you about it.  Well, then that was sort of stupid, wasn't it?  Yeah, it was.  Son, it's really important to think ahead through the consequences before you act, especially when you're angry, so these sorts of things don't happen.  So, what are you going to do to fix this?

This example was a teaching moment for my son.  Yes, he screwed up, but I didn't belittle him by calling him stupid, although I did call his actions stupid.  I gave him some good advice and the opportunity to correct his "sin".

2.  Your manner of posting reminds me of a quote:  "Let us disagree without being disagreeable."  It seems even google cannot attribute this quote to the original author, so it's almost risen to the level of an axiom...

Several other posters have already pointed out that you have an antagonistic posting style, so my thoughts shouldn't come as any shock.  You are your own worst enemy here.  You do make many salient points, but they tend to get lost in your derisiveness.  I don't expect you to make "nice-nice", but you certainly could keep your posts on topic without the personal attacks.

3.  On that note, I'm off to do my studies.  Be patient with me, because I am just the average pew-sitter with no formal bible studies under my belt.  It may take me a bit of time, but I will make a reply.  :)

Just curious -- how long have you been a Christian?  How long have you been attending church?

Wow I didn't know I was stupid ..........I know I'm not stupid for choosing to be IFB . This is a way of life for me. I would never call someone else stupid even if I was thinking it.......I'm sorry you think we are stupid but you may have put some nuts in the same bowl but we are not stupid.

Sure you are Sherry. I was stupid for every being a part of IFBdum. I'm not saying anything in this forum that I haven't told myself in the past. You maybe offended........ GOOD. You should be.

Jesus said "offenses must need come". You should do yourself a favor and study just why Jesus used these words. I lost friends..... People I loved and still love when I abandoned your cult to embrace the truth. I know you think you're not the same but you are.

Just let me tell you why.

You IFBs constantly berate those that have left your ranks. You allow you pastors to stand their pulpits and ridicule those that love Christ all the time. All the time. Week in. Week out. You.... Sherry. YOU.... sit there and let it happen. In fact, you probabily...(like a good cult member) sit there and say Amen. Maybe you don't realize what's going on.... but let me make it clear for you.

You've been offended by my words...... Yet. Your pastors condemn me and those like me.... and you don't do anything. Anything. Nothing. I've given biblical reasons why your ways offend me. They are offensive to others. Those that could care less about what someone thinks.

When your pastor stand in their pulpits and claim Jesus is a Baptist. That offends me. It offends me when you pastors stand in pulpits and say that if they weren't a "baptist".... they'd be ashamed. It offends me as a Christian to here your leaders twisting the Scriptures to the point that you're blind to these things.

So... you're not the only one that is offended. Maybe you should have a talk with your leaders and apply the same standards you applied to me above.... TO THEM. Stop being a coward.
christundivided, I am not in a cult. As Billy Graham states the cross is offensive....if you believe you were freed from bondage so be it. You have every right to believe what you want.......and so do I without making people feel like they are stupid. I hope it works for you....

Simple question.

Which is worse. Pointing out the fact that someone is being "stupid" or pointing out someone is a "whited sepulchres"?

Simple answer.

Calling people "stupid."

I have found calling someone "stupid" isn't the best conversation starter ...  8)

I'm not, nor have I ever been, IFB, so I really don't have a dog in this fight. So of course, having said that....

IMHO, the validity of his argument went out the window the second he called IFBs stupid. No matter how many verses he could quote, I would read his post through the lens of him insulting others who just happen to not agree with him and I just wouldn't be able to take him as seriously as I'm sure he'd want to be.

So an insult changed everything I said? Did Jesus every insult anyone?

Honest question. Be a honest man and give me a honest answer?

I think what you said was pretty dumb, aside from the insult.
I chalked the insult up to social inadequacy!

For a man that's left the IFB "movement".... you sure do defend them every chance you get. I once thought you might be different.... but I'm beginning to think you're really not.

Tell you what. Same challenge. I'll participate in a formal debate with you about this very subject. A moderator can edit anything they find offensive.

Up for it?

Sorry I disappoint you.

Point of clarification...you want me/somebody to debate you and the question is whether or not a good percentage of posters on this forum, brothers and sisters in Christ, are stupid?

To Rogue Tomato and ItinerantPreacher:  I started regularly attending church in 2004 and was baptized later that same year.  So, by that reckoning, I have heard approximately 520 individual Sunday sermons...because it has not been my habit to attend more than once a week.  I believe that qualifies me as the average pew-sitter.

It's doubtful I will be drawn down a rabbit trail, because I am a lazy pew-sitter who doesn't know her Bible and doesn't have the energy to follow rabbits.  And did I mention that I'm a decrepit old woman?

Thanks.  Since 2004 doesn't seem like a long time, but 520 sermons is a lot of sermons.

Did I mention that I'm a decrepit old man?  ;)

Maybe it's just me, but he doesn't sound very furious.  I attended two IFB churches in my time, and they were pretty bad, but I don't know about how that works out in generalities.  But if he's right about IFBs, then IFBs are pretty stupid.  The statement "I've been IFB since I was born again" is pretty stupid, IMO.  I don't remember who said it, and I don't feel like scrolling back through the thread, but I hope that's not really how he/she identifies himself/herself.

You belong to IFB? Good for you.

I belong to the body of Christ.

Tomato, I'm the one who said it.

I was saved in an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church and that has been my denominational affiliation ever since. Hence, I have been an IFB since the day I was born again.

We are not speaking about "belonging to the Body of Christ" which is a given to all those who believe in Him. We are addressing the absurd and illogical statement that if you are an IFB then you are stupid. It is a broad brush generality with no basis in fact.

Does anyone with a sound mind actually have a problem processing that?
