Wine and alcohol in the Bible

First time I've ever heard that one becomes a homosexual because he/she becomes an alcoholic. But what do I know?

Sometimes, those with homosexual lifestyles do resort to alcohol or drug abuse....we have a couple in our Celebrate Recovery....but not sure it's 'the rule'.

Not denying that but this is the first time I've read that alcoholism can make one "become" a homosexual.

FYI, clinical depression probably plays a role in various sinful lifestyles. Not all, mind you but no doubt, promiscuity, addictions, murder/suicides can be rooted in clinical depression.

For example, the NW IL suburb where the 14 year old girl stabbed her 11 year old sister over 30 times. No alcohol, no sexuality, no drug addictions mentioned. Not excusing all sin but sometimes excessive drinking can be caused by other root issues, perhaps even emotional disfunction/clinical depression.

Often sinful lifestyles can/do trigger depression.

Agreed. Can go both ways.

Smellin Coffee, is that what I said? I gave just a little bit of back ground! The father is the alcoholic because of HIS behavior he has two sons screwed up! One is going down the path of an alcoholic (but hey what is one drink) and the other son is gay. Because of his drinking problem he did not raise his sons to love and serve the Lord he was too busy drinking.  I have no patience for a "christian" that believes drinking is ok, I have seen what happens when one drink leads to more. And the out come destroys lives!! But go ahead and play the game, you are now free in Christ!!

Not funny!!

And yet I know of a family where a (now) single mom was married 3 times and would hook up regularly with different guys. She would be drunk a lot of the time. Couldn't hold a job. No dad in the picture at all yet somehow of the 4 boys who grew up in that home, 3 ended up in full-time ministry. Maybe it was her behavior that actually helped them turn out "right".

Not condoning alcoholism at all but sometimes seeing the influence of others' behaviors can change the outlook of the child. Tarheel is an example. He shared in an earlier post about seeing a family member being influenced by alcohol and now he won't touch the stuff. I say "Kudos!" to him for not following the same train wreck.

I have tasted alcohol a few times in my life. Never could take more than a half a cup of beer as it just tastes nasty to me. Tried to sip wine a time or two but I can't stand the aftertaste. I've never actually had any more than 4 oz at a single sitting and then maybe take a literal sip or two once or twice a year. I just don't like it. So my position of believing it is not sinful to drink is based on allowances God provided as recorded in both Testaments. I'm not sure what "game" you think I am playing because I simply do not drink with any kind of regularity. However, though I do not prefer it, there are those who do and I have no problem with them doing so.

It is my opinion that the saloonkeeper is worse than a thief and a murderer. The ordinary thief steals only your money, but the saloonkeeper steals your honor and your character. The ordinary murderer takes your life, but the saloonkeeper murders your soul.

The saloon is an infidel. It has no faith in God; has no religion. It would close every church in the land. It would hang its beer signs on the abandoned altars. It would close every public school. It respects the thief, and it esteems the blasphemer; it fills the prisons and penitentiaries. It despises heaven, hates love, and scorns virtue. It tempts the passions. Its music is the song of a siren. Its sermons are a collection of lewd, vile stories. It wraps a mantle about the hope of this world to come.

It is the moral clearinghouse for rot, and damnation, and poverty, and insanity, and it wrecks homes and blights lives today. The saloon is a liar. It promises health and causes disease. It promises prosperity and sends adversity. It promises happiness and sends misery.

I tell you that the curse of God Almighty is on the saloon.

Not funny!!

I wasn't trying to be. I just thought it was a very weird statement.

Jesus said it is what is already inside a man that makes him evil, not what goes into the man. Paul said it is the doctrine of demons to forbid foods that God has created...

...and a couple posters (and Billy Sunday!) disagree with them. I think I'll believe Jesus.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Ephesians 5:18

I would say that alcohol inside the good man can make him become evil. Best to be filled with the Holy Spirit and not wine.

Naturally we are free to do whatever, but will this please the Master? Will this draw us closer together?

In the case of the sons, they did not learn from their fathers mistakes, they participated. It is the extended family that has learned.

I don't think it was a weird statement.

Seeing as how our Master turned about 150 gallons of water into wine, I'm sure He's fine if people decide to have a glass every now and then.

Perhaps this wine from Jesus not only tasted good, but was unfermented wine. How could Jesus serve something that bites like a snake and poisons like a viper? (Proverbs 23:32)

I guess if you are making things up, you could assume whatever you wanted.

Of all the pathetic arguments against alcohol, this is the most pathetic.  "I have seen what happens when people abuse X, therefore nobody should ever do X."

I could replace X with almost anything.  Sex.  The ministry.  Marriage.  Eat McDonald's.  The list is almost limitless.  People abuse stuff.  It's not the fault of the stuff.  Now say it.  "I have no patience with Christians who think Sex, The ministry, Marriage, McDonald's is ok."

It's like the gun control argument.  "I have seen people shoot people with guns, therefore nobody should ever have guns."  The gun isn't at fault, and you won't solve the problem by banning guns.

I could care less if you think it is pathetic! Because my children's grandmother was an alcoholic they never got to meet her. She died at an early age and was NEVER a mother to her sons. This has aged my in laws. Next time my brother in law drives drunk I will make sure you are in his passenger seat helping him find his way home from an 8 hour trip he does not remember taking! There is a whole lot to this story and it is a PERFECT example to my children why to obey the Bible when it says, " Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." The Bible does NOT contradict itself. You can believe what you want. But in my household we do not drink. And rude comments from people just like you are ignored!!

I just find it crazy that perhaps Jesus would hand a Bud Lite to a friend and smile. I find it crazy that he would pop a can open and drink a little himself. Knowing that alcohol has a unique ability to be so addictive and harmful, it just seems like Jesus was handing a friend a gun and playing Russian Roulette. This seems so unlike the Master I follow. I see Jesus as being perhaps more responsible for those he calls "friend" .....
