Mrs. Hyles and the kids

The funeral notice states that Mrs. Hyles passed away on August 30, 2017 and her funeral was at Victory Baptist Church in Rowlett, Texas (IFB).
I don't know if Terry Smith is still pastor there, but he was the pastor at one time. He is one of the famous Smith brothers.

Terry Smith is dead.

The only reason I know this is that his younger brother, Tim, who was married to the oldest Hyles child (Becky) died a couple of weeks ago. I read it in the obituary.

For those interested in the history of the Smith brothers, below is a link to a blog. It is my opinion that the way their sins were treated by Brother Hyles and others paved the way for the Jack Schaap and David Hyles' of the IFB world.

I have heard people say, "the past is in the past," or things to that effect. But I wonder, does the past always stay there?

It truly makes me ill to have any association with the IFB world. I don't think I can walk into one of their buildings again.

I had absolutely no idea about the history of Victory Baptist in Rowlett when I posted the funeral info about Mrs. Hyles. Why would anyone who lived through all the shenanigans at First Baptist of Hammond want to get involved again in another church of the same ilk? Maybe Beverly was not a Victory member - just because her funeral was held there does not mean that she was a member. Maybe she just didn't know what was going on with the famous Smith brothers - gotta keep this stuff covered up for the good of the ministry, you know. My advice to anyone fleeing any church tainted by sex or abuse scandals: don't go to another church of the same stripe, try to distance yourself from that whole crowd that you are trying to get away from.

Current pastor at Victory, according to their web site, is Matthew Hon. The site is vague about his background - says he worked alongside his dad in "a Baptist church in Indiana."

This entire thread is amazingly horrible. It’s hard to conceive that so many people were deceived. After reading all this (what does that say about me?) I’m surprised that the churches weren’t setting up Asherah Poles. The IFB pastors that I have known have been pretty fine people and are nothing like the pastors mentioned here. I remember James Spurgeon’s (whatever became of him) book on the old FFF but I didn’t realize that type of stuff was so widespread among the leadership and big churches in the movement.

Could you elaborate and sustain this rationale?

To be honest, I had a hard time sleeping last night because I knew I had to write more on this topic.

I have been fortunate to meet some very fine people who attended the IFB church that I did in the early 80s. Most of them no longer attend that type of church. I am in sort of a unique position. I graduated from HAC and taught in a large IFB Christian school after graduation.

In the 70's, I was in my first or second year at HAC, when another student and I became friends. She was from the church in Michigan where Tim and Becky Smith served. She knew the teenager that Tim Smith was involved with. It was a lot for me to absorb. I was young and did not grow up in the church. I attended public school and never ever heard of any teacher or principal having an inappropriate affair with a student. In fact, my father was a public school teacher. He was never accused of that sort of conduct, nor would he have turned a blind eye to it. (I realize it's possible there was more going on than I knew of, but nothing to the extent I have witnessed in the IFB world.)

My home life was dysfunctional. However, any relationships I had with the opposite sex were with boyfriends close to my age. I could not fathom how an older man could take advantage of a young girl.

I now believe that the larger churches I was part of in Texas must have known or should have known about the Smith brothers, Dave Hyles, and perhaps even Jack Schaap. AND THEY DECIDED TO TURN A BLIND EYE. I do not condone it. Were they happy to have the large offerings? Did they or do they count the large sums of money and laugh at the sheeple that they influence? I hope not, but they are by law supposed to turn those people in, and it is clear to me now that they didn't.

I feel very strongly that Beverly Hyles knew about her son-in-law in Michigan and then her own son years later, but turned a blind eye.

After her husband passed away, she moved back to the Dallas area where she attended church at First Baptist of Dallas.

I can speculate on the intentions of people who turned a blind eye, but I never knew their heart and mind.

Before I left for HAC, I thought it would be wonderful to be married to a Baptist preacher. In my old age, I thank God that He had other plans.

My pastor worked in a church in Michigan . He came back to Hammond and told Bro Hyles what was going on at Pastor's School he was honored. Now that will leave a mark. To this day my pastor follows no one but the Lord.
And we wonder why people will not go to church? If this had happened to me I would never step a foot in church .....
