It's actually pronounced Skop but I'm sure those who know him personally would tell you the same thing.
 
I was watching CBS Chicago News and just now saw a preview - "Tonight at six, a local pastor dismissed for sexual sin (tv shows a shot a=of Schaap preaching) and why some members are saying they will still follow him".

How sad no matter what you think about him or FBC.

Unfortunately this is all too common...blind followers of the religious personality...clearly people like this are either totally ignorant (willfully so) or they love the mangwad more than the truth and the Lord!
 
Just watched it.

I think the head Deacon did a good job on camera.  Professional, humble and appeared sincere.

Also, the "followers" was just one young man who Schaap helped council off drugs and he never said he would follow him but that he still 'believed'.  Channel 2 Chicago is not a good station.

Oh by the way, I moved to the Chicago suburbs LOL.  Still GO STEELERS! Bears stink.

Just saw on Chicago NBC News that the FBI is taking the investigation because he took the girl across state lines.  Ugh sad.

So the question now is which federal law did he break if he did break a federal law?

{Chapter 117, 18 U.S.C. 2423(a)} forbids transporting a minor (defined as under 18) in interstate or foreign commerce with the intent of engaging in criminal sexual acts in which a person can be charged. This subsection is ambiguous on its face and seems to apply only when the minor is transported across state or international lines to a place where the conduct is already illegal to begin with. The United States Department of Justice seems to agree with this interpretation.

{Chapter 117, 18 U.S.C. 2423(b)} forbids traveling in interstate or foreign commerce to engage in "illicit sexual conduct" with a minor. 2423(f) refers to Chapter 109A as its bright line for defining "illicit sexual conduct", as far as non-commercial sexual activity is concerned. For the purposes of age of consent, the only provision applicable is {Chapter 109A, 18 U.S.C. 2243(a)}. 2243(a) refers to situations where such younger person is under the age of 16 years, has attained 12 years of age, and the older person is more than 4 years older than the 12-to-15-year-old (persons under 12 are handled under 18 U.S.C. 2241(c) under aggravated sexual abuse). So, the age is 12 years if one is within 4 years of the 12-to-15-year-old's age, 16 under all other circumstances. This most likely reflects Congressional intent to not unduly interfere with a state's age of consent law, which would have been the case if the age was set to 18 under all circumstances. This law is also extraterritorial in nature to U.S. Citizens and Residents who travel outside of the United States.


My interpretation may be wrong but it seems that these are only applicable if money is involved - prostitution. If all the FBI is investigating is what you heard than it is not likely he'll be charged. They don't seem to think the picture the girl texted is worthy of investigating. In many cases that would be considered possession of child pornography because she is under 18.

What a long way Schaap has gone down.  He seemed like a real decent guy back in the 80s.  I couldn't believe what a crack pot he started sounding like after taking over that church.

I don't think he will be charged.  The trend over the last 10 years or so has been to lower the age of sexual consent, and it has been lowered to 16 in many states, so there probably is no violation of law.

I doubt he will have to work, though.  I'd say he's probably got a tidy little sum squirreled away somewhere.

Under state law no but under federal law maybe. The case is now being investigated by the FBI. Federal age of consent is 18 which even though doesn't negate any state's age of consent if the girl was transported between states the federal age of consent would apply.

Perhaps, but as someone else pointed out, the federal laws are directed at the sex trade.  I doubt if they will pursue this.

I just don't understand why guys like this don't just walk away from the church culture and find an environment that encourages their behavior, like Polynesia; I guess the money is too good in the megachurch setting.
