PCC Cancels Singers Appearance Because One Is Gay

Yeah, I guess we are going to have to apply the bullwhip to the PCC administrators, for daring to disregard current standards of political correctness. Meanwhile, there are colleges who cancel scheduled appearances by conservative speakers all the time, which is not considered a problem, and it's okay to cancel Kirk Cameron's non-gay message. Seems like a double standard. It's okay to cancel out and shut down conservatives and non-gay artists, but if a vocally gay artist is canceled, then that's an international outrage.

"Actor and Christian activist Kirk Cameron is claiming that more than 50 public libraries have rejected his applications to hold a 'story hour' to promote his new faith-based children’s book, accusing them of indulging the 'woke left.'

"The 'Growing Pains' star says he hasn’t been given a story hour slot in public libraries, claiming that his publisher, Brave Books, has been told the messaging of his faith-based book, 'As You Grow,' 'does not align' with the LGBTQ-welcoming institutions.

"Dozens of public libraries in the US have reportedly rejected or not responded to his publisher’s request for the former child star to hold an event, according to Fox News.

“'We are a very queer-friendly library. Our messaging does not align,' one library worker from Rochambeau Public Library in Providence, Rhode Island — which promotes an event called the 'Queer Umbrella' — reportedly told Brave Books."

I wonder how come it's okay for a public library can reject a speaker whose message "does not align" with them, but if a private Christian college rejects an appearance by a performer whose message "does not align," then we all have to go into a tizzy over it.

Who on here said it was okay? Don’t point your finger at me, because I argued the opposite POV.

I consider myself fortunate that I got exposed to a wide variety of views from guest speakers in college. Admittedly, the opinions were too often tilted towards the left, but I’m glad I got opportunities to listen to literally guests ranging from Jesse Jackson to those who were considered white supremacists, and everything in between.

There is a big fuss over Pensacola canceling an appearance of a British group called the King's Singers because of the gay lifestyle of one of the singers. A no-win situation for PCC - they paid the performers anyway for the canceled gig. They would have been heavily criticized by their own constituency if they had allowed the performance to proceed, just as Bob Jones University was savaged years ago by David Cloud and many others for having the gay crooners called "Cantus" appear on campus.

"Students, parents and staff members had complained to the administration, saying that hosting the group would run counter to the college’s Baptist values."

Looks like this decision is creating dissension among the student body. I don't wish to take sides, but it seems to me that the PCC administration did what they had to do, to be consistent with their fundamentalist values.

"WEAR News on Tuesday spoke to a sophomore Pensacola Christian College student, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution. 'It's a pretty toxic situation right here currently,' the student said. 'It's just getting very stressful with this situation going on.' The student says opinions on the concert cancellation are split among students right now. 'Kids are always talking about it before class starts and whatnot,' the student said. 'There have been arguments and mini protests that happened on campus. It's just been a very hostile environment to be honest.'"

I am currently at PCC seminary, and I know a lot of students here, undergrad and graduate. I have no idea who the kid commenting here is (obviously) but he’s blowing steam. I know a grand total of one student that cares enough to make a thing about it, and that’s only to good friends (of which I am one). There’s nothing toxic here, perhaps a slight disagreement here and there, but that’s it. Overblown drama for an unfortunate situation par usual. Life is literally no different here now than it was before the incident. I know as many undergrad as grad, and it’s the same in both places. PCC did right by paying and taking care of them, and has made statements regarding the mistakes they had made to put themselves in this situation. Ugly weekend, but all the steps are being made to make it right.

You assume because I have a different opinion than you, that I’m a kid? I’m probably old enough to have gotten your momma impregnated with you. 😆 And by the way, I see you joined the site a grand total of 12 minutes ago! Get lost, troll!

I disagree. The group was only there to perform music, not teach politics or a lifestyle. This is no different than politically liberal colleges refusing to allow a conservative speaker on campus because some snowflakes begin to complain and protest.
Allowing them to perform would have been wrong....if they know this person is gay, they shouldn't even allow the group on campus of a Bible college. I disagree that they wouldn't be helping to support a gay lifestyle. And I hate to tell you Huk, I'm not a snowflake, and I'm 100% in agreement with PCC on this.

That’s one of the first things I thought of as well, but to be fair to PCC they may not have been aware in time to make an advanced/informed choice. My guess is they will use this as a learning lesson and adopt measures closer to what you have described.
President Shoemaker spoke to students and stated that we’ve had this group under contract since 2016. The individual who is under scrutiny has only recently joined the group, and it blindsided them a bit. He admitted the weaknesses that allowed this to happen in the first place, but he was VERY gracious to both students and the King Singers. Students clapped for him after giving the obviously difficult statement. His graciousness and willingness to be transparent with the students really impressed me.

Thanks for the insider perspective, and welcome to the forum! Take Huk with big grains of salt, like we do.😉

I meant the student, who is at least 8 or 9 years younger than me. So yeah, he is a kid to me.

You totally sure this person is a troll? He did seem to show up at a convenient time, though, didn't he? He didn't even bother to introduce himself, did he? I didn't really look to find out. Still, I know many students and former students. He could be legit.

I’m ok with that Joe…my conscience is clear on my stance.

Interesting timing, that’s all I’m saying.

Agreed, especially in regards to following their conscience, but I was delineating how standards for ministry in the church may vary slightly regarding the goals and prerogatives of a Christian college/education.
I'm of the mind that if a Bible college/Christian college is training ministers, evangelists, missionaries, etc., they should be held to the same standards as a church....period. If not, they've got no business teaching these people. Stands to reason to me.

Sorry, I did join at a convenient time because it just happened, and so was looking at different outlets to see how people outside were responding to the incident. I just thought it would be helpful to give insight from a person actually on campus. I am working on Church Music Degree here and am preparing for ministry after completely what would be my second masters. This is my first degree from here, so I have a pretty objective perspective.

Part of a well balanced education includes being exposed to different beliefs, although in this case, it was merely barbershop singing.
Yes, it is, but off the campus for this kind of thing.
