Perhaps the stores that are being closed are under-performing stores and the closures have been in the works for a while. If that's the case, I'll admit that it's bad timing on Walmart's part to announce bonuses and higher starting wages and then announce store closings.

I've been in one of the Sam's Club stores that is slated for closure in Illinois (Matteson) and I have to admit that it's not the best Sam's Club I've ever been in. It's also in an economically depressed area that has seen a lot of stores going out of business, so I'm sure that hasn't helped.

So rather than infusing $ into an economically-depressed area by fixing the issues, it just makes more people in that area unemployed. So what happens? The club members go to the more "economically productive" (i.e, white) areas to do their business. Hurts both the patrons in the area who are transportationally challenged as well as the former employees of the store.

Three of the six Chicago area stores that are closing are in predominately white suburbs, so that kind of shoots down that theory.

Perhaps, but the idea is still the whole thing is a shell game.

Perhaps, but Walmart needs to do what is necessary to placate its shareholders and to remain profitable.

Pelosi calls $1000 bonuses "crumbs" and Wasserman-Schultz says that $1000 won't "go very far."

A thousand bucks may be crumbs to a rich old hag like Pelosi, but for the family struggling to pay a higher than normal heating / electric bill, or a single mom needing to put food on the table and new shoes for her children, $1000 could very well be a godsend. And I'll just bet that there are folks out there that could "stretch out" that $1000 to make it last for several months.

Just more proof that the majority of DC liberals are out of touch with mainstream America.

No problem. Next time the Dems hit you up for a donation, just remind them that your "crumbs" won't "go very far," so there's no point.

2/1/2018 Ding Dongs anyone,

Hostess Brands is the latest company to offer bonuses thanks to the new tax plan. But it's the first to throw in Twinkies and Ding Dongs on top of the cash.

Hostess Brands said it would provide $1,250 bonuses to 1,036 hourly employees "following the recently enacted tax legislation."

The company said the bonuses would be $750 in cash and $500 in 401(k) contributions. It added that it would "further sweeten the benefit" by giving all of its 1,300 employees a year's worth of free baked products.
